1. Improve Ventilation

In many cases, high indoor humidity is concentrated in specific areas — bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms — where moisture is generated regularly. Improving ventilation in these spaces is a practical first step.

  • Use exhaust fans consistently. Run bathroom exhaust fans during and after showers, and use your stove’s vent fan while cooking. The best fans vent directly to the outside rather than recirculating air within the home.
  • Open windows strategically. On days when outdoor humidity is lower than indoor levels, opening windows on opposite sides of the house promotes cross-ventilation and helps flush moist air out.
  • Consider a whole-house ventilator. For newer, tightly sealed homes, natural ventilation may be limited. A whole-house energy recovery ventilator (ERV) can help regulate indoor humidity while bringing fresh outdoor air in and maintaining energy efficiency.

Improving ventilation is a low-cost starting point, but for homes with more significant humidity issues, it typically needs to be paired with additional solutions.


2. Address Moisture at the Source — Especially in Basements

If high indoor humidity is concentrated in your basement, the problem may be water intrusion rather than airflow. Cracks in basement walls or floors, poor exterior drainage, and inadequate waterproofing can allow groundwater to seep in — especially after heavy rain.

Before investing in mechanical dehumidification, it’s worth investigating whether water is entering from outside:

  • Look for visible cracks in basement walls or floors
  • Watch for puddles or damp spots after rainfall
  • Check for efflorescence (white mineral deposits) on concrete, which signals moisture movement through walls

If water intrusion is confirmed, basement waterproofing is the most effective long-term fix. A portable dehumidifier and fans can help dry things out after a flooding event, but they won’t solve an ongoing intrusion problem. Wet drywall, carpeting, and upholstered furniture should be removed promptly to prevent mold growth.


3. Run Your Air Conditioner

Many homeowners don’t realize that their central air conditioner or heat pump naturally removes moisture from the air as part of the cooling process. When warm, humid air passes over the cold evaporator coil inside your system, moisture condenses and drains away — reducing indoor humidity as a byproduct of cooling.

That said, there are limits to what a standard AC can do on its own:

  • Single-stage systems run at full capacity or not at all, which can mean shorter run cycles that don’t allow enough time for thorough dehumidification.
  • Older systems lose dehumidification efficiency over time as components wear.
  • Oversized systems cool the home so quickly that they shut off before adequately removing moisture from the air.
